Cameron University is teaming up with the City of Lawton to give a facelift to local parks and is seeking volunteers to assist with the project. Day in the Park is scheduled for Saturday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone can participate in the project. Participants can register as an individual or as a group at http://www.cameron.edu/dayinthepark/groupregistration.
“Great parks make for great communities,” says Leslie Cothren, Student Activities Coordinator and organizer of Day in the Park. “The City of Lawton maintains more than 80 neighborhood parks and community centers. One work day with many volunteers can have a significant impact on park maintenance, so we hope to see a large turnout.”
Registered volunteers will be notified of a park location one week in advance of the service day. Volunteers should dress comfortably and wear closed-toed shoes. Potential projects include painting, weeding or general maintenance. Supplies will be provided by the City of Lawton.
According to the Trust for Public Land, city parks and open spaces improve physical and psychological health, strengthen communities, and make cities and neighborhoods more attractive places to live and work.
