Cameron University welcomes Hengbi Xiao, a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA), to the Department of English and Foreign Languages for the academic year 2012-13. Xiao, a native of China, is teaching Beginning and Intermediate Chinese at Cameron.
“It is a pleasure to welcome Hengbi to Cameron,” says Dr. Marge Kingsley, Chair, Department of English and Foreign Languages. “At Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, where she has been teaching for six years, Hengbi is known for her innovative and creative teaching methods. She will no doubt inspire Cameron students with her desire to learn more about American culture and to share her own culture. “
Xiao holds a baccalaureate degree in English from Hunan University of Science and Technology and a Master of Literature in English Literature from Sun Yat-sen University. She has taught a variety of courses at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, including English, Western Culture, English Literature and Film Studies. Her decision to apply to the FLTA program was driven by her desire to experience American culture so she can ultimately share those experiences with her students in China.
“I am looking forward to an active cultural exchange while I am at Cameron,” says Xiao. “In addition to teaching, I hope to focus my own studies on contemporary American literature.”
The Fulbright FLTA Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, a division of the United States Department of State, and administered by the Institute of International Education. The program enables young educators to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States while engaging in non-degree studies at accredited post-secondary U.S. educational institutions. CU has previously hosted Fulbright FLTAs from India, Korea and China.
