Cameron University President Cindy Ross will be joined by Maj. Gen. Mark McDonald, Commanding General of Fort Sill and the Fires Center of Excellence, for Cameron’s annual Veterans Day observance on Monday, November 12. The ceremony will take place at the university’s new Veterans Grove, located on the north side of Howell Hall, at 12:50 p.m. The ceremony is open to the public.
“The military community is a vital part of Cameron University, and we are pleased to honor both retired and active-duty service members on Veterans Day,” says President Ross. “We are also honored that Maj. Gen. McDonald will be joining us for this special observance. In addition to attending the Veterans Day ceremony, I encourage community members to visit Cameron’s Bentley Gardens, which will be transformed into a field of American flags.”
For the second consecutive year, the grounds of Bentley Gardens will be awash with American flags, one for each of the more than 6,500 American men and women who lost their lives during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The breathtaking display will be available for viewing beginning on Wednesday, November 7.
The November 12 Veterans Day ceremony will begin with a minute of silence to honor our nation’s veterans and active-duty service men and women. Volunteers will then read the names of those whose lives were lost during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn since last Veterans Day, as part of the National Remembrance Roll Call.
Following the Roll Call, Maj. Gen. McDonald will speak, and Cameron will dedicate the new Veterans Grove, a serene grove of trees with seating to serve as a place of reflection and remembrance honoring those who have served our country.
In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony and dedication will be take place in Aggie Gym.
There are also other planned activities. Inside the McMahon Centennial Complex, Cameron will provide opportunities for students, faculty, staff and community members to send cards to area veterans as well as a Wall of Remembrance on which individuals can leave notes of gratitude. Additionally, Cameron University and Sodexo will provide a complimentary meal to active duty military and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Shepler Cafeteria.
