Cameron University hosted a speech tournament on July 14-15 during its 37th annual Speech Camp. During the tournament, participants competed in speaking, interpretation and acting events in two divisions: beginning and advanced. Awards were presented to the top three overall competitors in each division and to the top five competitors in each event. The tournament was run by coaches Paula McConnell of Marlow High School, Jennifer Denslow of Oologah High School and retired coach Cosette Wymer of Fairview High School.
In the advanced division, Stephanie Milligan of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Oklahoma City was awarded top honors by placing first in dramatic duet and humorous duet and third in humorous interpretation. Sam Morse of Shattuck High School finished second overall by placing first in both extemporaneous speaking and monologue. Sarah Garner of Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, Mo., Karisa Cooper of Marlow High School, and Caroline Cosner of Muldrow High School tied for third place.
In the beginning division, Daniel Pae of Lawton High School took top honors after finishing first in extemporaneous speaking, first in original oratory, and third in poetry interpretation. Bailey Anderson of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School finished in second overall after placing first in prose interpretation and tying with Pae for first in extemporaneous speaking. Bailey Hallum of Marietta High School and Victoria Kay M. Bowers of Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City tied for third place.

Cameron’s annual Speech Camp was launched in 1975. Over a two-week period, more than 330 students from 97 high schools in six states attended the camp, which was staffed by 73 volunteers from more than 50 high schools, colleges, and universities across the country.
