Lawton couple establishes endowed lectureship

Cameron University President Cindy Ross was joined by Dr. Wayne Johnson, an orthopedic surgeon in Lawton, and his wife Cassandra Lawson Johnson earlier today to establish the Dr. Wayne and Cassandra Johnson Endowed Lectureship in Business. The addition of this endowed faculty position brings the total of such faculty endowments to 72, more than any other regional university in the state. Endowed faculty positions provide educational opportunities for Cameron students that would not be possible otherwise.

"Wayne and Cassandra Johnson are truly community spirited," says CU President Cindy Ross. "The Johnsons continue to demonstrate their support of Cameron University through their generosity, and we are deeply appreciative of their commitment to higher education and the students Cameron serves."

"My wife and I feel that education is extremely important to help people achieve the American dream, and we really respect the mission of Cameron University," says Dr. Johnson. "It was so gratifying to know that the scholarships we provided last year made a difference in the lives of the students who received them, for truly, you get more joy in life from giving and helping others. When you see what Cameron means to this community, it inspires you to dig deeper and give more. This endowed lectureship is our way of giving back to the community that has done so much for us. I believe that Cameron is the lifeblood of Lawton; as Cameron goes, so goes Lawton/Fort Sill, and this is just my way of doing my small part to help make it better."

The university will request matching funds for Dr. and Mrs. Johnson's initial gift of $12,500 from The McCasland Foundation's Challenge Grant Program and then submit to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for a dollar-to-dollar match when state matching funds are available. If the endowment meets matching criteria, the total endowment will increase to $50,000.

The Dr. Wayne and Cassandra Johnson Endowed Lectureship in Business is intended to advance the quality of education in the study of business at Cameron University and in southwest Oklahoma. Students will be the primary focus of activities supported by the lectureship.

Active members of the Cameron University President's Partners, Dr. and Mrs. Johnson established the Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Johnson Scholarship in Math and Science in June 2008. Dr. Johnson currently serves as Vice President Elect of the Cameron University Foundation Board of Directors and as a team physician for the CU Sports Medicine Team. Together, Dr. and Mrs. Johnson operate Premier Orthopaedics of Lawton.
