Formatting a CD-RW using Roxio Direct CD

Create a data disc to "drag and drop" files to a CD-RW

NOTE:     This process will take approximately 25 - 45 minutes to complete.  You may continue to work in other programs while the CD-RW is being formatted.

1.

Insert the CD-RW Disk into the Rewritable CD drive.  In the Library Computer Lab, this drive is the "F drive" (second CD drive down from the top).

2.

Open Roxio DirectCD so you can begin copying files to your CD.  You can either:

  • Click Start on the Windows taskbar.  Point to Programs, and finally point to Burn CD & DVDs with Roxio.

OR

  • Double-click on the Burn CD & DVDs with Roxio icon shortcut on the desktop.

.
3. When the Roxio program opens, the "Select a Project" window appears.
4.

On the "Select a Project" window, choose make a data CD, and select the directCD button.

5.

Next, the "directCD format utility" screen will appear.  Select the format CD button.

NOTE:  Information under "CD Info" has the status as blank CD.

6.

The next screen will prompt you to enter a label for the CD-RW.  Enter another name, or leave it as the default "Volume 1" label.

The "full format" option is already selected by default.

Select Start Format to begin the formatting process.

7.

An alert box will appear with the notice to expect this process to take 25 - 45 minutes to complete.  Please make sure you have enough time to wait for the process to complete before proceeding.  Otherwise, select cancel to format the disk later.

8.

The "format in progress, configuring CD" box appears and the format process begins.  Other work can be done on the computer such as using MS Word, the Internet, etc., while formatting occurs.  However, expect performance to be slower.

After 25-45 minutes the "directCD format utility" screen will appear once again.

NOTE:  Information under "CD Info" has now changed from blank CD to ready for reading and writing.

Please continue to wait approximately 1 minute, until the next screen appears.

7.

When the "CD Ready" screen appears select OK.  The format utility screen (shown in step 8) still appears on the desktop.  Select the exit button in the upper right hand corner (the "X") to begin using the CD-RW.  The CD-RW is now ready to use.

NOTE:  Selecting the eject button on the format utility screen will eject the CD-RW for later use.

Save files by the "drag and drop" files method or use the "save as" command while using a software program, such as MS Word.  In the Library Computer Lab, select the "F drive" with the CD-RW in the second CD-ROM drive from the top.
