Formatting a CD-R using Roxio Direct CD

Create a data disc to "drag and drop" files to a CD-R

1. Insert the CD-R Disk into the Rewritable CD drive.  In the Library Computer Lab, this drive is the "F drive" (second CD drive down from the top).
2.

Open Roxio DirectCD so you can begin copying files to your CD.  You can either:

  • Click Start on the Windows taskbar.  Point to Programs, and finally point to Burn CD & DVDs with Roxio.

OR

  • Double-click on the Burn CD & DVDs with Roxio icon shortcut on the desktop.
3. When the Roxio program opens, the Select a Project window appears.
4.

On the Select a Project window, choose make a data CD, and select the directCD button.

5.

Next, the "directCD format utility" screen will appear.  Select the format CD button.

NOTE:  Information under "CD Info" has the status of blank CD.

6.

The next window will prompt for a label to be entered for the

CD-R. Enter another name, or leave the default "Volume 1" label.

Select Start Format to begin the formatting process.

The process will take approximately one minute.

7.

After approximately one minute the "CD Ready" window appears.

Select OK and then close the "format utility" window.

The CD-R is now ready to use.  To save files to the CD-R, either "drag and drop" files or use the "save as" command while using a software program, such as MS Word.

Ejecting The CD

When a formatted CD-R is ejected from the disk drive, the "Eject CD" window appears. This dialog box lets you decide how to eject a CD-R disk. The option you select determines how the CD can be used.
  • Leave as is - Only read/write CD-ROM disk drives can read the files if this option is selected.

  • Close to UDF v.1.5 - Use this option to give the CD to someone who has DirectCD 5.0 installed or who has a UDF v.1.5 - compatible reader installed. This option uses less space on the CD for each session than the next option, Close to Read on Any Computer.

  • Close to Read on Any Computer - Use this option to use the files in most CD-ROM disk drives.  Files can still be added to the CD-R later, however, this option requires approximately 22 MB of space on the CD-R the first time this option is chosen, and approximately 13 MB for each additional session.

Protect CD So It Cannot Be Written To Again - This is only available if you use the Close to Read on Any Computer option. Selecting this option permanently closes the CD so you can never write more files to the CD.

Canceling /Exiting leaves the CD-R in the drive the CD-R will not be ejected.
