MLA Style - Sample Bibliography

Based on Joseph Gibaldi's MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 6th ed. New York: Modern Language Association of America, 2003.  Library copies are available on the 2nd floor and in Reference at call number   LB 2369 .G53 2003.

General Rules for Citations:    
Full instructions & examples are in Chapter 5.  
See Chapter 6 to cite sources within the text.

Layout:     
1 inch margins on all sides.  12-pt Times Roman font.  Double space the page.  Use one space after punctuation.
First line of each entry must be at left margin!  Indent additional lines of an entry by 5 spaces (tab).
Alphabetize entries by author's last name (see example under Cameron Library Subscription Service).

Hyperlink: 
Turn OFF automatic hyperlinks in your paper.  In -Tools- menu select -AutoCorrect.-  Then click on -AutoFormat As You Type - tab and remove check mark next to - Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.-

Authors:   
First author has last name first, rest of authors are first name first.  If more than 3 authors - use first author, et al.

Title:     
Titles of parts of works and article titles are enclosed in quotation marks.  Titles of complete works are underlined.

Book:    
Author(s). Book Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, date.

Journal: 
Author(s). �Article Title.� Periodical Title. Publication information.  SEE Journal, Magazine & Newspaper Articles on back, or Sec. 5.7 in MLA Handbook. 
Journals use volume number. Issue number if needed (date): page numbers.  Magazines use date: page numbers.

Republished:       
Cite original source, then cite the republished source used.  (This includes reprints in print & through the Internet.)

Internet:   
Cite based on type of format.  Then add source information, date of access and URL.

Database articles:
Database articles (e.g. EBSCOhost, FirstSearch) have 2 parts to a citation.  Part 1 reflects the nature of the publication, so create citation based on the type of format (magazine, journal, or newspaper).  Part 2 refers to the specific database and company.  Include:  Name of Database. Name of Service. Library, City, State. Date of Access <URL>.
