ERIC

What is ERIC?

ERIC is the Educational Resource Information Center of the U.S. Department of Education.  The database contains over 1 million abstracts journal articles (EJ) and documents on education research and practice from 1966 to present.

Access ERIC?

Subscription Database access - covers 1966 - present.

On Campus:

Off Campus:

  • Access the Cameron University Library Home Page
  • Click on Citation and Full-Text Databases - Off Campus
  • Choose ERIC (First Search)
  • For Username, enter the first initial of your first name, the first initial of your last name and the last 6 digits of your Student ID Number.
  • For Password, enter the first initial of your first name, the first initial of your last name and the last 5 digits of your Social Security Number.

ERIC Website access - covers 1966 - 2004.  Starting October 2004, the ERIC website has most ED (unpublished) documents in full-text from 1993 - 2004.

2 formats of ERIC materials:  (document type)

  • ED = ERIC Documents - documents not published in journals (RIE).  These are available on microfiche, with over 80% of the microfiche collection containing the full text of the document.  In Cameron University Library the microfiche materials beginning with ED127417 - present are housed on the second floor in the microform area.
  • EJ = ERIC Journals - abstracts and some full-text of published journal articles (CJIE).  Search CU Library Catalog for the journal title and date needed.  If the article is not available in the library, you may request it through Interlibrary Loan

Thesaurus

  • Select Advanced Search tab, and click on the subjects icon:

  • On the Find Preferred Subject Headings screen, type a term in the search box and click find.
  • Click on expand and select the term that reflects your search.

Limiting searches from the Advanced Search screen:

  • Search by subject headings which reflect the subject of the document.  Keyword searches will result in many false hits.
  • Use the Boolean operator AND to "shrink" the search.  Ex: learning disabilities and hyperactivity
  • Search by Record Type.  Type in the number code for the publication type you want to retrieve.  Most common types are: 080 journal articles, 143 Research/technical, 041 doctoral dissertations (See also: Complete List of Codes for Publication/Document Types).
  • Limit by type.  CIJE = EJ numbered journal articles.  RIE = ED numbered documents (microfiche).
  • Limit by date.
  • Limit to subscription held by Cameron University Library.  If this option is used, the ED documents will not be shown.

Education Students:

Educator's Desk Reference includes lesson plans, resource guides, and a "search ERIC database" option (abstracts only).  The "Questions Archives" contains information dated 1992 - 2003 from the AskERIC service.  AskERIC was discontinued in December 2003.

Limit by Record Type (Publication Type) in Advanced Search

Record Type - used for subscription database searches (FirstSearch or EbscoHost).  Enter the Code # (from Complete List of Codes for Publication/Document Types) as Record Type in drop-down menu.
e.g. 051 as Record Type = Guides - Classroom Use - Instructional Materials (for Learner)

Publication Type - used for ERIC website searches.  Under Publication Type, select checkbox for type of material.
e.g. Guides - Classroom - Learner
