Can I use Instant Messenger software in the Library Computer Lab?
Instant Messenger software (often called IM software or IM clients) are
popular programs that can be used to communicate with others on the
Internet. Some of the more popular IM clients include ICQ, Windows MSN
Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, and Trillian.
Patrons are requested to not download, install, and use IM
clients in the Library Computer Lab. According to the Cameron
University Computer Use Policy, users are prohibted from attempting to modify or
add software without authorization. In addition, some IM clients are
security risks to computers.
If you need to communicate with others over the Internet for academic
purposes, it is recommended you use e-mail. However, IM clients such as
ICQ and MSN also provide online web versions of their messengers. To use
these, all you need to do is log in and message people through the web site
itself. In using this method, you avoid having to install any software at
all.
