What is Literature Resource Center

It is a Gale online database which provides access to biographies and criticism of more than 120,000 authors from every age and discipline, including historians, journalists, and scientists.  It combines resources from Gale's print resources in one searchable database. 

Author information includes: 

  • a list of author's works
  • biographical information
  • current journal articles
  • criticism of author's works
  • Internet resources

  • Access the Cameron University Library home page
  • Click on Citation and Full Text Databases - Off Campus
  • Click on Literature Resource Center
  • User Name - Enter the first initial of your first name, the first initial of your last name, and then the last 6 digits of your Student ID Number.   
  • Password - Enter the first initial of your first name, the first initial of your last name, and then the last 5 digits of your Social Security Number.

To search by author
  • Enter a name or parts of the name in the entry box and click on SEARCH.
  • The author search will take you to an alphabetically arranged results list of author names (followed by author birth and death years) that matches the query.
  • If the search is not successful, the Advanced Search using the drop-down menu will permit more flexibility in searching for an author.

To display tabbed search results
  • For most searches your search will be divided into categories--Biographies, Literary Criticism, Work Overviews, Bibliographies, and Additional Resources. Click the tab that matches your needs.
  • Biographies Tab includes biographical information on authors, such as their variant names, nationality, and genres, literary movements associated with an author.
  • Literary Criticism, Articles, and Work Overviews Tab contains three subtabs allowing the user to view each set of documents separately by clicking on subtabs.
  • Bibliographies Tab contains two subtabs, one leading to lists of works by the author, the other to works about the author.


More Search Options

  • Title Search -- Title has three options. Click the circle next to option to select.
    • Any words entered (Will result in many false hits)
    • All words entered
    • Exact title
  • Advanced Search allows flexibility and a wide range of search options. Use the drop-down menus to choose your options.
  • Authors by type--Find an author or list of authors who meet specific classifications such as genre, literary movement/time period, nationality, and ethnicity. To select more than one option hold down the control key and highlight your choices.

To Print and Download:
  • Download to disk -- Click  , then File, then Save As
  • Click on  -- then use the browser print options (for full document view the full-text).
  • Click  on  -- then type address and click send (for full document view the full-text).

Other Features
  • Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature is searchable from its button on the top navigation bar. It includes more than 10,000 terms, such as name, literary time period, or genre.
  • Gale Literary Index has "index only" citations to Gale Literary Criticism Print Series.
  • Authors on the Highway links to the Publishers Weekly database listing upcoming author appearances.
