CETES building

Center for Emerging Technology and Entrepreneurial Studies

Cameron University will play a key role in the development of new technology in Southwest Oklahoma, thanks to its Center for Emerging Technology and Entrepreneurial Studies (CETES).

CETES will occupy space on campus in the building formerly known as the Physical Science Building. The building, originally built in 1964, was one of many erected during Richard B. Burch's presidency. Nearly all of its classrooms were the same size, making it easy to conduct student lab experiments and projects. A multimedia classroom on the lower level enriched the classroom experience for both students and professors. However, a growth in enrollment after Cameron became a four-year institution created cramped quarters, making it much more difficult to adequately meet the learning needs of students. The building was vacated in early 1997 when the department of physical sciences moved to the more spacious CU Sciences Complex.

Renovation of the building began in April 2004. When the first phase is completed (tentatively set for December 2004) CETES will become a multipurpose facility that is intended to become a catalyst for the development and growth of knowledge-based industries in Oklahoma. It will use state-of-the-art technology and the expertise of CU faculty to develop a trained workforce and provide support services for fledgling industries. CETES will house CU’s multimedia design department, as well as an incubator to sustain these new technology companies. The center will provide office space, technical advice and computer support for entrepreneurs to encourage them to locate their businesses in Southwest Oklahoma. CETES can contain as many as 12 of these units.

Additional phases planned for the development of CETES may include a large academic lecture hall, a networking center, a business conference facility and a center for regional economic development.
