The Surrounding Community: Lawton/Ft. Sill
Once at the edge of a city, Cameron University has been engulfed by Lawton, Oklahoma, a growing city with a population around 111,000. The city offers cultural enjoyment through the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lawton Community Theatre, the Museum of the Great Plains, and various art shows including the Arts for All Festival in the spring. Everyone enjoys the International Festival each fall with ethnic entertainment, scrumptious food, bargain shopping, and information booths from over 20 countries.
Lawton's neighbor, Fort Sill, joins people from around the country and across the world as the nation's field artillery center. There students can experience the history of the West by visiting the holding cell and grave of Geronimo, the famous Chiricahua Apache warrior.
Just northwest of Lawton, students can enjoy the relaxation of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Camping, hiking, fishing, and other recreational activities offer students a weekend break from studying. Or bring your books along and peek up every once in a while to catch a glimpse of the deer, birds, elk, and buffalo that abound in the Wichitas.

A Diverse Population
Approximately 5,000 students each semester, the University's population reflects the city surrounding it with nearly 40% minority enrollment. Among the minorities, 18% are African American, 8% Native American, 8% Hispanic, and 5% Asian/Pacific. In addition, we have almost 6% of our students gathering from over 40 foreign countries and our U.S. students gather from 48 states. With an average age of students being 27, our campus is home to both traditional and non-traditional students with more that 400 students living on campus.
Personal Academics
Cameron University offers time for its students. Most classes have a maximum of 40 students and many upperclass sections may have 15 or less. This allows attentive communication between faculty and their students.
Cameron is one of few universities in the state that offers associate degree, bachelors degree and masters degree training all on the same campus. A student may choose to complete his studies from over 40 bachelor degree programs, 12 associate degree programs, or 5 graduate programs. An agreement with the University of Oklahoma also allows a student to complete a bachelor or master degree in nursing on the Cameron campus.
In recent years the university has expanded beyond its physical campus to include online students and classes that are broadcast to several sites in Oklahoma using ONENET. This allows students from a variety of locations across the state to take classes close to home .
