Shepler Center - Cameron's traditional living-learning environment!

Welcome to Shelper Center!

Norht Shepler Tower   Shepler Center is comprised of two traditional high-rise residence halls - North Shepler (male) and South Shepler (female). The halls are connected by a commons area that includes a student/faculty cafeteria, as well as a 24-hour computer lab. Lounges on each resident floor provide a venue for student interaction.
   Also housed within the Shepler Center complex are laundry facilities, a coffee house, and Cameron's One-Stop Shopping
office - a convenient place to accomplish a variety of school-related functions.
   Residents will also find a state-of-the-art workout facility just steps away from Shepler Center. The Cameron Fitness Center features complete weight training and cardiovascular equipment, as well as a swimming pool, racquetball courts, basketball courts and an elevated walking/jogging track.
   Resident safety is a priority for Cameron University. To ensure resident security, the CU Office of Public Safety is located on the first floor of South Shepler, while North Shepler houses a 24-hour information desk to answer student questions and monitor residence hall activity.

Your Room in Shepler Center

   CABLE TV and INTERNET/EMAIL ACCESS is available in all residence halls! There are no monthly charges for cable, an initial charge of $66.00 is figured into the housing contract. Internet is absolutely free and unlimited access.
  
Tours of the residence halls are available upon room availability. Call the Residence Life Office at 581-2392 to set up an appointment.
  
Each room measures 12ft by 14ft. There are two twin beds in each room which can be moved around or removed from the room. There a limited number of extra long mattress, measuring 39in x 80in. There is a desk in each room that measures 6ft long, 2ft, 4 1/2in wide, 2ft, 3in tall. Each desk has a drawer on each side and built in shelves on the side of the desk. Some desks are detached from the wall and can be moved within the room. However, if a desk is attached to the wall it may not be removed! There are two chairs provided for the desk. You may bring your own carpet, but it cannot be glued down to the floor. If you chose to pull up the carpet in your room you must haul it off campus. Each room has a total of 11 electrical outlets. There is plenty of storage space in each room with an upper storage that steches across the room, two closets, and eight drawers. There is a vanity in each room between the closets with a florescent light, large mirror, and an electrical outlet. Smoke detectors are also installed in every room for safety. They are checked regularly by the RAs.

Telephone Service

   All rooms are equipped with phone line service. Please bring your own phone. If you do not bring a phone, you can check-out a phone through your Hall Director. There is no charge to use the phone, but there is a $30.00 charge if a phone is returned damaged or broken. There is no monthly charge for local phone calls; the charge is included in your initial payment.
  
You do have to pay for long distance phone calls. You may not charge any long distance calls to your room, nor accept any collect calls. Therefore phone cards are the most popular means of long distance service among residents. The companies listed below are compatible with our system. Consult your phone book for other companies and numbers.

   When making calls to anyone on campus just dial the last four digits. To call anyone off campus, you must dial 9 first. Your telephone can be forwarded to another number on campus by lifiting the receiver, dialing #, then 1, then the extension where you will be. To unforward your calls lift the reciever, dial #, then 1 and hang up. Your phone is also equipped with call waiting for off campus phone calls. You will hear a beep on the line when there is another incoming call. To answer the 2nd call, click the switch hook one time, then click the switch hook once more to go back to the 1st caller.
  
There is a payphone in Shepler Center located in the breezeway between North Shepler and the Mezzanine area and on individual floors in North Shepler.

Laundry Facilities

   There is a 24 hour laundry facilities located in the South Shepler Tower. It takes $0.75 to wash a load and $0.50 to dry a load of laundry. A change machine is located in the South Shepler Hall Director's office. It is accessible Mon - Fri from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

Intensive Study Floor and Quiet Hours

   The 10th floor of both towers in Shepler Center are designated as intensive study floors. This is a floor geared toward residents who desire to live in an atmosphere conducive to full academic concentration and 24 hour quiet hours are maintained.
   Quiet Hours are inacted on every floor at 10:00pm and extend to 10:00am every day. The noise level during this time is to be kept at a minimum. The RA on each floor or an RA on duty determine what is quiet. A general guideline is that if someone in the next room can hear you with the doors and windows closed, you are too loud.
   Each semester beginning the 72 hours prior to the first scheduled final, 24 hour quiet time goes into effect for all Shepler Center and remains in effect until the last scheduled exam.

Mail Service

Each resident has a mailbox in the center of Shepler Center next to the cafeteria. The mail is delivered Monday - Friday by 3:00pm, except for holidays. You can buy stamps and send packages off at the post office located in the Student Union Bookstore. There is also a mailbox located outside of the North Shepler Tower. If you choose Shepler Center as your place of residence while studying at Cameron University, your address will be as follows:

What electrical appliances may I bring?

Desk lamps, typewriters, computers, radios, stereos, small refregerators (3 cubic ft or less), small microwaves (700 watts or less), tape/CD players, televisions and VCRs, answering machines, drip coffee makers, clocks, irons, hair dryers, fans, electric shavers, surge protectors.

Do Not Bring: hot plates, extension cords, octopus plugs, toaster ovens, electric blankets, or any appliance with an open coil. All of these items are fire hazards.

Residence Life can rent you a microfridge which has a combination refrigerator and microwave.

May I cook in my room?

Because the cooking, storage and disposal of food contributes to unsanitary conditions, attracts insects and other pests, and can be a health & safety hazard, cooking is permitted only on a limited basis.

May I paint my room?

YES!! You may paint your room with prior permission from the Residence Hall Director. You can use most light shades of colors in a water-based latex paint. The color must be approved by the hall director prior to painting. All instructions and paint contract forms are available from the Hall Director.

May I bring bunk beds or a waterbed?

Ready-made,sturdy bunk beds are allowed.You may not make bunk beds out of scrap lumber or use the bookshelf in the room as a support because these are unsafe.

Waterbeds are not allowed in the residence hall rooms, except for verifiable medical reasons and with prior approval.

Can I smoke in my room?

Cameron University is a smoke-free environment. You are NOT allowed to smoke in your room.

Can I hang pictures on my walls?

Yes, please use white plasti-tak only (available at Wal-Mart and various other locations). There is a bulletin board that extends the length of the room above the beds to hangs pictures on.Please do not use nails, tacks, or hot glue on the walls and woodwork. If you have any questions about what you can and cannot use on the walls, check with your RA before you hang anything.

Can I have pets?

Fish are the only pets allowed in the residence halls because of sanitation and health precautions. Fish tanks can be no larger than 10 gallons.

What about heating and air conditioning?
  • All rooms are on central heat and air conditioning.
  • Blocking the vents causes an uneven distribution of the air to several rooms. To keep everyone comfortable on the floor, you may not block vents with items, such as towels, or change the thermostats.
  • Tampering with the thermostat cover or changing the thermostat setting will result in a $50 fine.
  • If your room temperature is uncomfortable, contact your RA.

What if I need repairs done to my room?

The Residence Life staff will try to fix any problem in a resident's room. If a resident notices that something needs to be fixed they need to contact their RA. The RA will then fill out a work order. The staff will try to fix the problem when a resident is home, but that is not always possible. Our staff will enter your room and make the repair without you present if needed. For security reasons, repairs will always be made in teams of two.

What are an RA's duties?

When you move into the residence halls the RA goes over a room inventory with you. A room inventory documents the condition of your room at the time you move in and move out. You should look over this form carefully and bring any discrepancies to the RA's attention because it will be used to assess fees for damages at check-out.

Once a month, the RAs also perform room inspections. This inspection is designed to check for health and safety hazards, as well as maintenance concerns. Residents are not required to be present for room inspections. RAs always perform room inspections in teams of two for security. Your RA or Hall Director will notify you of any problems found.

May I have a single room?

YES! Whenever space is available, and payment has been made, every effort is made to grant a single room request. There is an additional charge for a single room of $340 per semester. However, the University cannot guarentee a specific room or a specific roommate if proper procedures are not followed.

What if my roommate moves out? Do I get a single room?

You may pay the difference for a single room. If you do not want to pay the single room rate, you will be given the option or finding someone to move in with you. If you refuse a roommate, you will be charged the single room rate, due at the next regular sceduled payment date.

May I change rooms?

Yes, you may change rooms. Room changes will not begin until the 3rd week of classes. To change rooms, follow these procedures:

  1. Go to the Hall Director's office and request a room
  2. You must complete a Change of Contract Form
  3. You must make an adjustment payment for changing from doudle to single or vice versa before moving
  4. Provide proof of payment, and the Hall Director will open your new room for you to begin moving
  5. You will have 24 hours to move your belongings, turn in your old keys and receive your new ones

An unathorized room change is any instance when a resident moves belongings or takes up residence in a room other than the room assigned by the Hall Director. Such unathorized moves subject the residents of all rooms involved to additional room charges, fines, and/or disciplinary action.

Where can I park on campus?

There is a lot on the west side of the residence hall that has been designated as parking for residents of Shepler Center. Residents of Shepler Center have special orange parking stickers to denote being a resident.

How do I gain access to my floor?

You will be given a personal elevator code which cannot be shared with anyone else.
