The Department of English & Foreign Languages administers scholarships, tuition waivers, and awards available to English and Romance Languages majors at all levels. Specific criteria for each scholarship are listed on the appropriate application form. The Financial Assistance Office can help you to apply for federal assistance as well as for other scholarships available to Cameron students in a variety of disciplines.

English and English Education Awards
Jessie Mae Hines Language Arts Scholarship
Available to English and English Education majors. To qualify, students must have completed 90 hours and have an overall GPA of 3.0 with a GPA of 3.5 in the major. Applicants should show evidence of outstanding scholarship, leadership, and creativity. Awards range from $100 to $500.
Lawton Shakespeare Club English Scholarship
Conceived in 1990 by an endowment from the Lawton Shakespeare Club, this scholarship is available to English Education majors at Cameron. To qualify, students must be sophomores or above and have an overall GPA of 3.0 with a GPA of 3.5 in the major. Awards range from $500 to $600.
Valree Fletcher Wynn Scholarship
This scholarship is available to incoming freshmen. To qualify, students must be Oklahoma residents who have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate evidence of leadership ability. Preference is given to students who are economically disadvantaged or members of underrepresented groups. Preference also given to students declaring a choosing a major in English or English Education. Award covers full tuition for one year.
Incoming freshmen who have declared majors in English or English Education are eligible for tuition waivers from the department.
Tuition waivers are available to continuing English majors who hold a GPA of 3.0 or above (overall and in the major). Applicants must also have completed at least thirty hours at the college level.
Creative Writing Awards
Matt Haag Scholarship
Established by the Haag family in memory of Matt Haag, this scholarship awards $250 to a single short story not exceeding 6000 words. March deadline.

Leigh Holmes Creative Nonfiction Prose Award
Established by Professor Emeritus Leigh Holmes, this prize awards $250 to a single creative nonfiction student essay. (The total number of students and student entries should total a minimum of eight. Given too few entries (8 or fewer), the essay review committee will reserve the right not to award a prize in any given year.

ENTRY FORM: Leigh Holmes Creative Nonfiction Contest
John G. Morris Poetry Prize
Established by Professor John G. Morris in memory of his mother, Marian Cary Miles Morris-Zepp. A first prize of $250 and a second prize of $150 will be made to original poems, previously unpublished, on any subject and in any form. the criteria for judging include freshness and originality in idea, image, and form; exact and precise execution of whatever the poet attempts; the right words in the right order. Open to all Cameron undergraduate students enrolled for the Spring semester are eligible to enter.

International Languages and Romance Languages Education Awards
Lahoma E. Benke Scholarship
Available to Romance Languages Education majors specializing in Spanish.
Available to students who have declared a major in International Languages or Romance Languages Education. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the major (Incoming freshman should have a high school GPA of 3.0)
