Presented:

The Business of Penetration Testing

Summary

Penetration testing are words that are used often in information security. It refers to a type of audit performed on a system testing for vulnerabilities that an attacker may be looking to exploit. The individuals conducting the audit are often known as the “pen-testers”. Becoming a pen-tester is definitely an attractive bonus in studying Information Assurance and Security but learning individual tools to test certain areas of a network will be needed. This presentation will give a look into the basics of conducting a thorough penetration test. The topics will include initial contact, internal and external scanning, an in-depth tool utilization of nmap, metasploit, nessus, john the ripper and backtrack 5; as well as deliverables to the client.

Presentation was at Feb 2nd. At 8:00 am at CETES.

Technology versus Psychology:  Balancing Technology, Education, and Policy for Maximum IT Security.

Brief description:

For years there has been active debate about how much emphasis should be placed on technical solutions versus user training in regards to information and network security. Indeed, where do policy considerations fit into this picture. In this presentation we shall review the merits of technology, user education, and proper policy and how these should be balanced to achieve the best level of information security for any given organization.

Database Competition: April 4, 9-11 am

Eight students braved the first annual Computing and Technology Week Database competition. In Part One of the competition, students had to draw the ERD to the problem statement and then create a logical schema of the ERD. Also, using SQL, they had to create the tables and relationships of their ERD.  In Part Two, the students worked off of a created database and manipulated data into information.  They also created a form and report.  The competition used MS Access as the DBMS.

MS Office Competition: April 4,1-3pm

Six students participated in the Microsoft Office Competition.  The students had to import a text file into an Excel spreadsheet.  After the import, they were required to insert columns, format cells, construct formulas that may include IF and VLOOKUP functions, work with dates, several other built in functions as well as several tools available in Excel such as PivotTable, Filter, Chart and subtotal.  Time permitting, the students were to create a report to the President of the company and a Powerpoint presentation to the Board of Directors.

The learned there were many different aspects to using an Excel spreadsheet.
