FFA Interscholastic Career Development Event

FARM SHOP CAREER DEVELOPMENT EVENT
APRIL 9, 2008 ~ 8:00 A.M.
LOCATION: CAMERON UNIVERSITY AGRICULTURAL MECHANICS SHOP
(Located in the south end of the CU Mechanics shop -
across from the gas pumps on the west edge of the CU Campus)

One team of three or four (3-4) members per school. NO individual contestants. NO partial teams. Transportation to contest site (Cameron University Agricultural Mechanics Shop) will NOT be provided! Transportation to the site should be provided by contestants and sponsors.
It is assumed that students are experienced in the skill areas. Any student deemed to be a hazard to themselves or others will NOT be allowed to participate!
The contest will consist of the following:
     A.      Written Exam: Each contestant will complete twenty (20) questions over farm shop material.
     B.      Oxy-Acetylene Welding: Each contestant will complete a gas  welding exercise. The skills will be performed with Victor torches mounted on an oxy- acetylene manifold system.
     C.      Arc-Welding: Each contestant will complete a fillet lapp weld exercise using the E6013 electrode in the flat position. Cameron University has Miller welders.
     D.      Problem-Solving: Each contestant will solve fifteen (15) written problems associated with farm shop work.
     E.      Measuring: Each contestant will accurately measure sixteen (16) items using measuring devices including, but not limited to: tapes, rules, gates, vernier calipers and micrometers.
     F.      Tool Identification: Each contestant will identify twenty-five (25) modern farm shop tools.

    
SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Safety equipment including "eye protection devices" (Z87-89) are required. Each contestant MUST provide their own industrial quality personal eye protection, and they MUST USE IT while participating in those activities in which they might be injured. Clothing SHOULD be in good repair and fit properly. Long sleeved clothing (no flannel shirts) and high topped leather footwear MUST be worn when students are arc and gas welding or cutting. Welding equipment such as helmets, gloves, pliers, goggles and face shields will be furnished. Welding electrodes WILL be furnished. Any participant who is deemed to be a danger to themselves, others, or equipment will be escorted out of the CDE area and will receive a zero (0) score for that activity.
WRITTEN MATERIALS AND PROBLEM SOLVING: All written materials will be furnished for the contest. Contestants should provide pencils or pens. Questions will be asked on all phases of farm shop work. Electronic calculators MAY be used but cannot be passed around! All communication devices must be turned off durring the contest.
The problem solving section will include mental activities involving the gathering of information and the use of a logical solution process based on commonly accepted standards and the available information to solve a problem specific to a particular subject matter unit.
    
SCORING        445 POINTS TOTAL    TIME ALLOWED: 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES

Measuring:             40 Points        Measuring            15 Minutes
A total combined team score of 1335 points is possible. The team with the highest combined score will be declared the winner. In the instance of a tie, the same procedure as outlined in the Oklahoma State FFA Career Development Events rules will be used to break the tie.
The highest individual will be the contestant who has the highest score in all six areas. In the instance of a tie, the same manner used to break team ties will be utilized.
Teachers are invited and encouraged to review the activities only after the event. CDE event officials will remain at the site for 30 minutes after the last participants have finished.
