Camp I Workshops

Individual Events

The IE divisions offer lectures, demonstrations, and individual coaching. Advanced IE students are required to bring 2 or 3 new contest selections, cut to time and memorized. Beginning IE students are encouraged to bring contest selections, but there will be help during camp with selections. The Beginning IE Division is limited to students with one year or less of tournament experience. The IE tournament will be held Thursday, July 17 and Friday, July 18.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate

LD topics for camp will be announced in the Confirmation Packet.

Beginning LD: Little (less than one year) or no competitive debate experience. Emphasizes basic skills. Students do not have to bring case to camp.

Intermediate LD: No less than one year of competitive debate experience. Emphasizes philosophy, skill drills, and practice rounds. Students do not have to bring a case to camp.

CX Debate (with Beg & Adv Labs)

One division of CX Debate (with beginning and advanced labs) is offered in Camp Session I. The division will emphasize debate theory, research, case construction, and practice. Students do not have to bring a case to camp. Any CX debater that comes to camp as a single will be paired with another student by the coordinators.

Camp II Workshops

CX Policy Team Debate

The 2008-2009 NFL national topic (also used by UIL) will be the camp CX topic. The topic wording will be included in the Confirmation Packet.

Beginning CX: Little (less than one year) or no competitive debate experience. Emphasizes basic CX theory and skills. Students do not have to bring case to camp.

Intermediate CX: No less than one year of competitive debate experience. Emphasizes debate theory and practice to move beyond the novice level—a balance of instruction, hands-on argument construction and debate practice. Students do not have to bring case to camp.

Advanced CX: No less than one year of competitive debate experience. Emphasizes research, case construction, advanced negative position construction, and practice rounds. Students do not have to bring case to camp.

NOTE: Any CX debater that comes to camp as a single will be paired with another student by the coordinator in that division.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate

See descriptions for Beginning LD and Intermediate LD in Camp I Workshops.

Advanced LD: Advanced LD Division will be held in Camp Session II only. This division is helpful to debaters who will serve as leaders on their team. Emphasizes affirmative and negative winning strategies and tactics. Students should come to camp with Aff and Neg cases on the camp topic and be prepared to debate on the first day. Activities will include analysis and research of prospective 2007-2008 NFL LD topics.
